This is going to be a post about admitting that I am ignorant. This is not meant to say that one way is right or wrong. This is just something I feel compelled to do. I’m being as honest and aware of the realities around me, but I don’t have the vocabulary a lot of the time to talk about hard issues like sexual identity, so I am hoping this is a small way to get more awareness about the whole thing.
So, if I get it wrong in this post, please, please tell me. Seriously, I’m inviting you to show me how wrong I am.
I heard the term “cis man” for the first time about 3 months ago. Someone on okcupid, who was very cool, had it on their profile page. It said something like, “I am no interested in cis men,” so I decided to look it up. This is what I found on wikipedia:
"Cisgender and cissexual (often abbreviated to simply cis) describe related types of gender identity where an individual’s experience of their own gender matches the sex they were assigned at birth. Sociologists Kristen Schilt and Laurel Westbrook define cisgender as a label for “individuals who have a match between the gender they were assigned at birth, their bodies, and their personal identity” as a complement to transgender."
Apparently I am a cis man.
